Every year, the French bike mag Velo awards the Velo d’Or to the year’s best cyclist as voted upon by a jury of journalists from the international cycling community. Philippe Gilbert was this year’s recipient, far and away out-distancing himself from runner-up Cadel Evans and third place Mark Cavendish. Think about that for a moment: the winners of the Tour de France and World Championships finished well behind Gilbert in the voting!
